Reiki Level 1 Training
Reiki Level 1 is normally the first stage of Reiki training and is designed for people who want to learn the basic principles and practices of Reiki.
You do not usually need previous Reiki experience before starting Level 1. Many students begin simply because they are curious about Reiki or would like to learn how to practise Reiki for themselves.
What Is Reiki Level 1?
Reiki Level 1, sometimes called Reiki First Degree, introduces students to the foundations of Reiki practice.
Courses commonly include some background to Reiki, its origins and principles, together with practical instruction in how Reiki is traditionally practised.
One of the main focuses at this stage is often self-Reiki — learning how to practise Reiki for yourself before worrying about progressing to more advanced training.
Students may also practise basic Reiki hand positions with another person under the guidance of their teacher.
What Do You Learn on a Reiki Level 1 Course?
Every Reiki teacher has their own course structure, so there is no single Level 1 syllabus used by everyone.
However, a good beginner course should give students time to understand the foundations of Reiki and gain practical experience rather than simply receiving a certificate.
Ask the teacher what is included before booking so that you understand what you are paying for and how the training will be delivered.
Level 1 training may include:
- The origins and history of Reiki
- The principles of Reiki
- An introduction to Reiki practice
- Self-Reiki techniques
- Basic hand positions
- Practising Reiki with another person
- Personal boundaries and consent
- Attunement or initiation within the teacher's tradition
- Advice on practising after the course
Who Is Reiki Level 1 For?
Reiki Level 1 is generally suitable for complete beginners. You do not normally need experience of complementary therapies or any previous Reiki training.
People attend Level 1 courses for different reasons. Some are interested primarily in personal wellbeing and self-practice, while others may already be considering progressing further with Reiki in the future.
Complete Beginners
Level 1 is the normal entry point for people who have never studied Reiki before.
Personal Practice
Many people learn Reiki simply for themselves and have no intention of becoming professional practitioners.
Future Practitioners
Level 1 can also be the first step for people who may eventually continue to Reiki Level 2 and further training.
What Is a Reiki Attunement?
Many Reiki traditions include an attunement or initiation as part of Reiki training.
Within Reiki teaching, this is traditionally regarded as an important part of introducing the student to the Reiki practice.
The exact form of the attunement varies between teachers and Reiki lineages. Some teachers may use different terminology or approaches.
If this is important to you, ask your prospective teacher how their training is structured before enrolling.
How Long Does Reiki Level 1 Training Take?
Reiki Level 1 courses vary in length.
Some are taught intensively over a day, while other teachers spread training across more than one session or provide additional follow-up support afterwards.
Course length by itself does not tell you whether a course is good. Look at the amount of teaching, practical experience and support being provided.
Before booking, ask:
- How long is the course?
- How many students will attend?
- How much practical work is included?
- Are course notes provided?
- Is there an attunement?
- Will I receive a certificate?
- Can I contact the teacher afterwards?
What Happens After Reiki Level 1?
Completing a Level 1 course is generally the beginning of learning Reiki, rather than the end.
Students are often encouraged to spend time practising self-Reiki and becoming comfortable with the techniques they have been taught.
There is no need to progress immediately to Reiki Level 2. Some people remain at Level 1 for a long time, while others later decide they would like to develop their Reiki practice further.
Your teacher should be able to explain their recommendations regarding practice and progression after the course.
Reiki Level 1 vs Reiki Level 2
Level 1 generally concentrates on establishing the foundations of Reiki and developing a personal practice.
Reiki Level 2 normally builds upon those foundations and may introduce additional techniques, symbols or practices depending on the Reiki tradition being taught.
You should normally complete Level 1 before progressing to Level 2.
Typical progression
- Reiki Level 1 – foundations and self-practice
- Period of practice and development
- Reiki Level 2 – further techniques and study
- Advanced Reiki practice
- Reiki Master or Teacher training if desired
How to Choose a Reiki Level 1 Course
There can be considerable differences between Reiki courses, even when they are all described as Level 1.
Take time to look at the teacher's Reiki background, course content, teaching format and the support available after the course.
A good teacher should be willing to answer reasonable questions before you book and should not pressure you into progressing quickly through additional levels.
Teacher Experience
Ask about the teacher's own Reiki training, tradition and experience of practising and teaching Reiki.
Practical Teaching
Look for sufficient time to practise the techniques rather than a course based only on written material.
Support Afterwards
Being able to contact your teacher after the course can be valuable as your own practice develops.

Can You Become a Reiki Practitioner After Level 1?
Reiki traditions and teachers vary in how they describe the different training stages.
Level 1 is generally regarded as foundational training and often focuses strongly on personal Reiki practice.
People intending to offer Reiki professionally should discuss progression with an experienced teacher and consider further Reiki training alongside practical matters such as insurance, professional boundaries, privacy and responsible communication.

Reiki Level 1 Questions
Do I need to have received Reiki before taking Level 1?

Do I need any qualifications to start Reiki Level 1?
Generally no. Reiki Level 1 normally requires no previous Reiki qualification.
Can I learn Reiki just for myself?
Yes. Many people learn Level 1 primarily for self-practice and personal interest rather than to work professionally.
